the secret garden
Children who have just completed five year old kindergarten enjoy this pretty classroom which is located in Building #3. The Secret Garden has it's own outside entrance and offers a wide variety of teacher created activities designed to meet the broadening skills of the children who walk through the doors.
KELC's expansive curriculum, aided by professional teacher-developed lesson plans, makes for developmentally appropriate and engaging activities in language arts, science, math, art, music, and more. Lessons emphasize the integration of social skills such as cooperation, empathy and self-control. Nature Studies, Engineering, Yoga, Gymnastics, Culinary Class, Art, Zumba, Physical Education and Gardening activities round out the rich curriculum KELC offers. The curriculum creates a holistic approach in nurturing a child's social, emotional, and academic success.
Large group, small group and individual education provides a variety of learning opportunities that nurture different learning needs. Life-long skills are modeled and practiced during Morning Meeting, a large group activity designed to encourage children to express themselves through greeting one another, sharing, collaborating on problem solving and academic skill building. Center-time offers children a chance to tap into curiosities by choosing from the areas of dramatic play, sensory table, large equipment, library, listening center and teacher-directed table activities. Small group instruction is practiced to provide children with a chance to receive tailored instruction. Goals, created by parents and teachers provide the basis for instructional decision making. The Secret Garden, like other KELC classrooms, prepares children well for their first years of school and for a life-time of learning.
During Summer on the Farm, Paddington Station welcomes first and second grade children each day. This beautiful classroom overlooks KELC's nature center, playgrounds, and pond. Teachers plan activities designed to meet the broadening skills of these young learners. Here, language arts, author studies, math, science, multicultural studies, music, and art are woven into fun and engaging weekly lesson activities to ensure that children maintain skills gained during the school year. Teachers work to continue building student confidence and enthusiasm for learning.
As in all KELC classrooms, teachers help children development the skills necessary to get along with others while communicating their own wants and needs. Individual, small group, and large group activities meet the developmental needs and interests of the children.
the big red barn
Our Big Red Barn served as a home for animals for 150 years before it received a facelift in 2001 and was restored to provide a bright, cheerful, learning space for children in KELC's third through fifth grade summer campers. Old grayed beams that once supported the roof above horses, cows, kittens, chickens, and hay bales have been sandblasted to the honey color they sported over a century ago, when the barn was built to last. Wooden nails and hand-hewn cuts in the beams were retained as a central part of the Barn's substantial and long-standing character.
A large wooden deck provides an extra space for campers to spread out to enjoy snacks, lunch and a number of outdoor summer activities. Our oldest group of summer camp students enjoy easy access to large grassy play areas, the gardens, animal center and playgrounds.
